You know a term or phrase has taken off when an entry about it hits Wikipedia. Direct response advertising is one of those phrases. The easiest way to define direct response advertising or marketing is by calling it a form marketing that garnishes a direct response from the customer to the advertising agent.
The traditional phrase for direct response marketing was direct marketing which included things like telemarketing where an advertiser goes directly to a potential client. The majority of direct response marketing takes place over the web. An advertiser places an offer alongside a description and then the viewer is given contact information if the product or service looks attractive.
One of the easiest examples of this is infomercial advertising. A product is shown through features and benefits. The competition is mentioned and then a number is listed alongside a price for those interested in buying. Direct response advertising is the easiest way to see results in the shortest amount of time. Since much of it is done online, results are easily tracked which helps in the sales process.
