making an infomercial, direct response marketing

People have tried a lot of different ways of making an infomercial to sell new products, but I heard about one approach recently that just has me shaking my head in disbelief at the audacity and humor in this particular approach. The company featured in this outrageous infomercial advertising is called Blendtech. Naturally enough, the product they're trying to sell through their direct response marketing is blenders. But the Blendtech approach to making an infomercial is something that is so outrageous and so classic that I think it should be taught in marketing classes. The reason I think their approach to making an infomercial is so original and so effective is that it piggybacks on all of the hype surrounding the introduction of Apple's new iPhone 3G. People are clamoring to get the new iPhones; there are lines around the block to buy them. So what does Blendtech do? Blendtech founder Tom Dickson takes a brand-new iPhone 3G, puts it into a Blendtech blender and then proceeds to convert the coveted iPhone into a pile of black dust. The last time Blendtech did this, the company auctioned the resulting dust off on eBay, adding the effectiveness of their outrageous stunt. Anyone doing infomercial script writing should go to YouTube and watch this ad and learn how to do effective marketing.
